Ever since we began our Journey of Design of Beijing Design Week, our love for Hutongs only grows stronger. Do you still remember our first Hutong art battle at Qinglong?

ABC-115

ABC-115 Round One:

Waking of the Old Hutong

Jinbao’s Autumn/Yunqiao Xu

Remember this painting? This is a wonderful artwork by a beautiful designer, Yunqiao Xu. You can see that the entire picture is filled with warm, shiny sunlight, which represents her endless love for life. Through art, she illustrates her feelings, thoughts and the attitude that she enjoys and cherishes every single moment in life.

Paoju Hutong/Ziqi Zhan

The painter of this high-contrast piece is only 11 years old - she's Ziqi Zhan from Taiwan. Paoju Hutong is the old Hutong that she's most impressed by - the patterns and marks on the old grey walls are like scribbles of ancient stories. And the blue, blue sky she captured with her paint brush just made the scenery even more impressive.

Doornails/Ziwei Zhan

Take a look at this painting – does it look familiar to you? If you stand farther away from the painting and complete the rest of the picture with your imagination, you would see the red gate of the Forbidden City. Painter of this piece is a 14-year-old boy from Taiwan – he intelligently captured a famous little corner of the old Beijing with his simple yet engaging artwork.

Late Autumn/Yunqiao Xu

Yunqiao Xu, a girl from Beijing nicknamed “Onion baby”, illustrated the joy of harvest with her colorful work, Late Autumn. She said, “My mom used to live in a hutong when she was little, and she told me a lot of fun stories about that time, like picking luffas in yards with her friends. Even though I grew up in a slab-type apartment building already, I’m still longing for life in hutongs.”

A Stone Lion in Qinglong Hutong/Qianjiangyue

Did you see this stone lion in qinglong hutong the other day? Qianjiangyue, also named Manli Qian, is an ingenious GK designer who specializes in 3D design. She created this vivid stone lion painting with 3D design techniques.

Slow Time/Yinxuan Qiu

Let’s walk into the old qinglong hutong with the old man in the painting – and enjoy our “slow time” there. Look, the old man is carrying two stacks of books, one in front and one behind, which are both tied up with plastic strings. Despite the hustle and bustle of Beijing city, the old man leads a slow, relaxing life here in the hutong.

Nine Lines/Yanshan Ou

The lines around the electric pole in this picture are more than just electric wires – they symbolize complex lives in qinglong hutong. The painter, Yanshan Ou, a senior student in China Central Academy of Fine Arts’ Department of Design, depicted an electric pole in qinglong hutong. Even though the orientations and starting points of the lines vary greatly, they're all connected to the red pole, which symbolizes the spirit and culture of old Chinese Beijing hutongs.

Winter/Buran

Buran, also named Lei Chang, is one of the founders of the social enterprise, Buran . She loves especially the season winter – as it is humble and gentle, and it helps trees get rid of redundant branches and prepares nature for the next four season cycle. Walking down a hutong in winter time is like talking to an old man – everything starts afresh from this point, and one has to listen carefully and humbly.

Hutong Image/Jing Li

Don’t you feel relaxed looking at this elegant painting, Hutong Image? It’s like you can walk down the beautiful hutong in the painting. In this work by Jing Li, you don’t see unnecessary or complicated lines but clear composition and proportional space.

ABC-116

ABC-116 Round Two:

Liveliness of the Old Hutong

Going Home/Yi Wang

For Yi Wang, a calligrapher and an entrepreneur, “hutong” is more than just an old street – it’s a place where she grew up. In her painting, Going Home, she depicted the hutong scenery in her memory. Her great calligraphy skills allow her to handle the rhythm and the composition of the painting perfectly. If you look closely, you would see that as if every stroke in the painting is alive.

Unpredictable Beijing/Qijia Cao

In younger generations’ mind, how does old Beijing look like? As a young woman born in the late 90s herself, Qijia Cao illustrated her own impression on old Beijing in her work, Unpredictable Beijing. She believes that when people listen to Chinese opera, they pay more attention to the rhythm of the songs and the singing methods of the singers instead of the lyrics. Accordingly, she believes that the “rhythm” of a painting plays a really essential role.

The Cat in the Hutong/Hanhwa Zheng

Look at this cat in the hutong – it’s looking into your soul with its big, round eyes. Hanhwa Zheng is a freelance artisan who specializes in freehand drawing and oil painting. Lots of his work have been collected. He said that he’s willing to work hard in the “farm of art” and share the fruits with everyone.
