金工金数项目解析(下)——典型项目分析

融工程(Financial Engineering)/金融数学(Mathematics of Finance)专业兴起于80年代末90年代初,是综合运用数学、统计学和计算机编程技术来解决金融问题的崭新领域。金融工程学侧重于衍生金融产品的定价和实际运用,它最关心的是如何利用创新金融工具,来更有效地分配和再分配个体所面临的形形色色的经济风险,以优化它们的风险-收益特征。

在《金工金数专业解析(中)》这篇推送中,我们分析了部分金工金数项目,以及他们的招生就业以及申请难度,今天我们继续,看看还有哪些典型金工金数项目。
芝加哥大学


University of Chicago Financial Mathematics program


Chicago MSFM program is offered in Chicago and at Singapore satellite campus


Founded in 1996 by an exceptional team of educators, the University of Chicago’s Financial Mathematics Program has had the honor of shaping some of the brightest minds in the financial industry today. A pioneer in its field, our Program offers 15 months of accelerated, integrated coursework that explores the deep-rooted relationship that exists between theoretical and applied mathematics and the ever-evolving world of finance. Our mission is to equip our students with a solid foundation in mathematics, and in doing so provide them with practical knowledge that they can successfully apply to complicated financial models. Our students become leaders in their field; program alumni have gone forth to find success at companies like JP Morgan, UBS, and Goldman Sachs.

 
 A new Program structure will be introduced at the start of the 2014-2015 academic year. Students will generally complete the extended curriculum in five-quarters, or 15-months.

This leaves us with information for 78 graduates and a response rate of 83% and of that number:
★ 27 or 34% are employed as “Analysts” (i.e. hedge funds, banks, energy firms, trading companies, human capital org.)
★ 21 or 28% are employed as “Trader” (i.e. energy firms, banks, prop trading companies)
★ 11 or 14% are employed as “Quant Developer” (i.e. banks, prop trading companies, behavioral economics, Grosvenor)
★ 10 or 13% are employed as “Consultants” (i.e. Clearing Houses, Deloitte, Navigant Economics)
★ 5 or 6% are employed as “Risk Management” (i.e. CME Group, local prop trading firms, Banks)
★ 4 or 5% are employed as “Research Assistant/Associate” (i.e. Booth, NBER, Milliman, Energy Firm)

Lastly, 55% of the 78 that responded found employment in Chicago and 14% work in their home country. Additionally, 2012 and 2011 numbers are consistent with this data for this time of the year.

Cornell University Financial Engineering program


Program Philosophy 

Cornell MFE degree is offered by School of Operations Research and Information Engineering (ORIE) as part of its Master in Engineering program. Cornell MFE is a highly competitive and professionally oriented program building on traditional mathematical, scientific, and engineering skills, but focusing closely on the application of these skills in the field of finance. Great emphasis is placed on career development with the goal of giving our students the necessary tools and information to become successful employees for the duration of their professional lives.


Curriculum 

The main objectives of the MFE program at Cornell are to advance the breadth and depth of our students’ technical knowledge and to provide students with opportunities to synthesize and apply this knowledge in the financial industry. In ORIE, the technical tools of primary importance are mathematical modeling and the application of quantitative techniques developed within the fields of optimization, probability, stochastic processes, statistics, and simulation. During the first two semesters spent in Ithaca, students are exposed to these subjects via a structured curriculum specifically designed for our MFE students. Another integral part of the Cornell MFE Ithaca curriculum is a selection of related courses offered at Cornell business school. We strongly believe that this combination of the ORIE and business school courses prepares students best for a wide range of quantitative careers in finance.


The emphasis of the third semester, which takes place at CFEM in New York City, is on further advancing and broadening our students’ practical knowledge. At CFEM, students are given ample opportunities to take courses taught by practitioners and attend practitioner-led seminars. The capstone component of the Cornell MFE program is the team-based financial engineering design project, which all students complete with the guidance of a sponsoring financial institution and Cornell faculty advisor.


Role of CFEM Semester 

CFEM academic programs complement the theoretical education of our Master of Engineering students in Financial Engineering by providing practical understanding of the financial markets through professional development programs and third semester curriculum.


All Master in Financial Engineering students spend their third semester at CFEM. Practitioners are actively involved in the classroom as course instructors, project sponsors, and guest lecturers. CFEM elective courses vary from year to year to accommodate the changing demands of the financial industry and to ensure that our students acquire the necessary knowledge and learn directly from professionals.


Professional Development 

Cornell MFE strives to teach students how to become valued and successful professionals. Several career development programs are integrated into the curriculum and are complemented by individual counseling. Our placement rates are a great indication of the success of the professional development programs.

Cornell这个项目每年招人倒不是像哥大那么多,因为招生太多了他们的地理位置不能保证学生有较高的就业率。最近几年Cornell实施了一个Manhattan计划,就是将学生的最后一学期放在纽约,让学生能够更方便的一边学习一边实习。


Cornell的项目有一个特点就是对学生出身非常的看重,国外的本科比较受青睐,清北等知名高校的相关项目录取人数都比较多。目标申请这个项目的申请者可以仔细的研究一下这个项目的偏好和需求。

UCLA MFE is a 13.5 month full-time program under UCLA Anderson business school


Overview

The finance industry needs professionals who possess deep mathematical modelling skills and computational expertise. The Master of Financial Engineering (MFE) Program at UCLA Anderson School of Management meets those needs by merging mathematical and statistical tools with finance theory to equip our students for highly rewarding careers. Graduates of the UCLA Anderson MFE Program apply these concepts to build models, solve problems and evaluate opportunities in areas such as risk management, asset management, derivatives trading, corporate finance and data analytics.


Academics

As a fully-integrated part of the UCLA Anderson School of Management, the MFE Program is based on the business school paradigm of merging theory and principle with up-to the-minute business practice. The UCLA Anderson finance faculty is among the best in the world. Consistently top-rated, they are leaders in cutting edge financial engineering research, as well as the practical implementation of current theory.

The full-time MFE Program begins in November and lasts for 13.5 months. The specialized curriculum integrates mathematical, statistical, and computer science tools with finance theory as applied in industry settings. The total program consists of 52 units.
All MFE students are required to complete a summer internship related to financial engineering. Students will have completed two-thirds of their coursework by the beginning of the internship in mid-June.

Alumni

The UCLA Anderson network is one of the world’s largest and most renowned alumni networks with members in all 50 states and more than 100 countries. MFEs will become members of this network and have access to the alumni database. UCLA Anderson MFE alumni actively participate in academic seminars, speaker events, and host field study projects at their respective organizations. The MFE Program also has regional alumni chapters, through which graduates can expand personal and professional networks, meet with visiting faculty and connect with local business leaders.


简析
UCLA的MFE项目,按照地理位置和学校实力而言,是处在一个比较尴尬的位置,但是通过他们的实习数据和就业数据来看,也能看出这个项目的实力。他们项目的优势在于,学生较少,每个学生能够获得学习,实习以及就业资源都比较的充沛,这从某种程度上弥补了他们地理位置的不足。同时,这个项目是一个春季项目,大部分学生都会有一定的工作或者实习经验,这也无疑提升了学生本身的就也能力。综合来看,这还是一个非常不错的项目。


除了上面的一些常申顶级项目以外,还有一些非常不错的优秀项目可以参考。

 

例如Baruch的MFE项目,质优价廉,是很多学生的dream。Baruch跟北大清华合作比较多,学生除了正常的申请流程以外,还会有一个优先的提前批次申请,是很多中等条件的学生不错选择。


其次,像Michigan的Quantitative Finance, Rutgers的Mathematical Finance, Boston University的Quantitative Finance,以及Georgia Tech的Quantitative and Computational Finance都是非常不错的项目,大家都可以仔细的研究研究,作为很不错的主申加保底的项目。
 

最后除了美国的一些项目以外,英国也有一些类似的项目,光大金工金数申请者也都可以参考一下。
